In my opinion, Winter is the best time to have a baby… and therefore the best time to take your maternity photos! (I’ll be honest – I’m definitely here for babies ANY TIME…but I do really love winter!)
Close your eyes. Imagine a stunning mountain backdrop. Snow softly flurrying in the air. Rosy cheeks and bright lips. You – looking like a goddess in a beautiful sweater dress and textured layers. Cradling your beautiful bump. Nuzzling noses wrapped up cozy in blankets. (Gah – The scene is enough to make me want to get pregnant again!)
My first baby was born in April and I was so grateful that I did not have to endure my third trimester in the middle of the summer heat. I was comfy and cozy in leggings, oversized sweaters and scarves – living my best rainy day crisp weather life! I didn’t have to worry about my thighs sticking together or buckets of boob sweat dripping down my belly. (TMI? sorry, not sorry) The cool air kept me happy! Winter mamas – you know what I’m talking about!

And since you are MUCH more comfortable in the crisp air, you can be much more confident and comfortable in photos. Making winter the perfect time to rock that amazing baby bump and have this beautiful season of your life preserved.

Here are my top 5 reasons why Winter Maternity Sessions Rock!
- Less crowds! Prime locations are often nice and quiet after the fall rush, giving you a peaceful session without bumping (pun intended) into everyone and their brother or fighting for the perfect overlook. You can enjoy intentional moments together with your loved ones without a million people around. That makes these sessions not only easier from a logistics perspective, but also more meaningful for you. You can slow down and genuinely enjoy the time together.
- Early Golden Hour – Near the end of your pregnancy your energy levels may start to deplete and you probably just want to get to bed early! Winter means earlier sunsets and earlier Golden Hours. So you can still be home and in bed at a reasonable time after your beautiful evening session.
- Winter Clothes add extra personality to your images! I love layers and textures. And when you take outdoor photos in the winter, you can add so many wonderful accessories! Cute hats, mittens, scarves, long coats, chunky sweaters, amazing boots! The list goes one. So much opportunity to personalize!
- Cooler temps Make You Look Good! Your rosy cheeks, extra sparkle in the eyes, and the way the light bounces back against a little dusting of snow… it’s just perfection!
- Cozy in home Sessions – I love a stunning mountain scene, but winter also opens the door for cozy at home sessions. Cuddling on the couch. Cozy Pjs. Soft blankets. Fuzzy socks. An in-home maternity session is beautiful and intimate – and is even more charming when outside temps are low and your house is a warm sanctuary.

All of these are awesome reasons why Winter Maternity Photos are a great idea (especially in states like Colorado where we do have a real winter). But the TOP REASON why maternity photos are great in the winter – is if that’s when you are pregnant! Maternity photos are best taken when you are between 30-34weeks pregnant. And if that falls in the winter then, you guessed it, that makes the Winter the PERFECT TIME to have your maternity photos taken!
